CONGRATULATIONS Erin FitzPatrick!
Winner of Assignment #16: Sports

There were many great shots to choose from for this contest, so thanks for all the beautiful images. We chose a shot of a swimmer by Erin FitzPatrick as our winner for the month of October. This shot captures the raw power and beauty of sports -- the swimmer is frozen in intensity, but motion is clearly defined. The eye is drawn to the yellow nailpolish caught so crisply and then to the trail of water she is leaving behind. This continues the eyes' journey through the picture, while her arm has already traveled out of the frame to the next moment.

Lens Test: Sony 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 DT AF
The widest lens available for the Sony Alpha 100, this optic controls distortion brilliantly.

The widest lens available for Sony's Alpha 100 DSLR, this digital-only (DT) zoom, the 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 AF ($580, street), isn't recommended for use on older Konica Minolta Maxxum film cameras. But Alpha users may love its 16.5-27mm equivalent focal length, even if that is a narrow range by today's standards...
